i’ve been following the news on the new girls’ shirt from jc penney, which boldly announces, “I’m Too Pretty To Do Homework So My Brother Has To Do It For Me.”
on the pro “how empowering and awesome is this sweatshirt” side is thehairpin, asking if the shirt can be made in a women’s M. [puke]
on the con “thanks for sending women’s empowerment back 100+ years” side are gothamist, the washington post, jezebel, the village voice, and others. one woman started a petition on change.org, which caught immediate attention.
perhaps even more offensive than the shirt itself, the product description asked, “Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out?”
a statement was promptly issued by jc penney, saying:
We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize for any concern we may have caused and assure you that we are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that [our customers] have come to expect.
however, still on sale is the “best subjects” tee, listing off “boys, shopping, music, and dancing” as the options.
where’s the shirt boasting, “i took your spot in advanced calculus”?
